Wind waving the drapes

It was fortunate
That the day my owner died
She was feeding me

Changing my water
Filling my bowl with some seeds
While chirping her way

I looked down at her
Then to the open window
Wind waving the drapes

Fluttering my wings
Cautiously I made my way
Whistling with wild hope

I looked back at her
Sleeping now there in her cage
She would never leave

  1. "It was fortunate

    She was feeding me"

That is the BEST opening ever.

Before I read on, I must say that it reminds me of ... I can't remember if it was a true news story type of thing, or if it was a movie scene (probably the latter) ... but in any case, it was a war zone, and a mother was breastfeeding her baby when she was killed. The baby actually lived because it was somehow able to keep nursing in her arms (for I'm not sure how long), even though she was dead.

Anyway, now I'll see what your poem is ACTUALLY about. ;)

Ooh, the ending is just as good:

    "I made my way
    Whistling with wild hope

    I looked back at her
Sleeping now there in her cage
    She would never leave"

  4. Beautiful! How reluctantly we move on to claim our full selves, leaving those we love. I am in Awe.

  5. Oh this is wonderful! The bird's escape from his cage, looking back at the woman now stuck in hers........what a tale!

  6. What a clever use of perspective - I hope there was some affection for her owner - though no one wants to be caged it's a big world out there.. I love the picture too
